In Memory of Robbie Mitchell, friends of Jim & Kate Mitchell, the Rotary Club of Brighton North and Jim & Kate Mitchell have each pledged $3,000 per year for 3 years to establish a Scholarship to provide financial support to candidates wanting to undertake a Graduate Diploma in Adolescent Health and Welfare at Melbourne Uni.
The scholarship, to be known as the Robbie Mitchell Scholarship, will have initial seed funding to the value of $27,000
As you maybe aware a Youth Suicide Awareness Committee was established in 1996 by this Club and became a District 9800 New Generations Sub-Committee in 1997.
Our role has been to source funding for those who work daily with adolescents to undertake the 2 year Diploma Course in Adolescent Health and Welfare at the University of Melbourne through its affiliation with the Royal Children's Hospital.
Since its inception, more than 100 students have graduated from the Course.  The Course is mainly directed at teachers, school nurses, police officers, youth and social workers and workers in correctional institutions.
The course is over 2 years and costs $6,000 per year per student, 50% of the fee is provided by the person doing the course and the other 50% is provided by way of scholarships or other financial support from Rotary Clubs.
In this regard friends of Jim and Kate Mitchell, who lost their son Robbie to suicide on 16th February 2009, have pledged a total amount of $3,000 for the next 3 years starting in the new Rotary Year.  These are friends who are both inside and outside our Rotary Club
In addition to these funds our Board has agreed to match this amount with a further $3,000 per year for the next 3 years
In honor of Robbie's memory, Jim and Kate Mitchell will support the Scholarship with a matching amount of $3,000 per year for 3 years
Therefore the scholarship, to be known as the Robbie Mitchell Scholarship, will have initial seed funding to the value of $27,000
