Here's a short tale from Russell and Petra's recent visit to Berlin.

Whilst recently in Berlin, Petra and I were walking past the Intercontinental Hotel when I thought it wise for a brief pit stop. We were about to head thru a very picturesque area where the numerous consular offices are located on our way to the Victory Column in Tiergarten. Whilst looking at the impressive line of security people present (there was an international meeting of sports ministers) we noticed a familiar badge, the Rotary Wheel.
Paul Harris had visited Berlin in 1932. There is a stone to mark the date that was hidden for many years and found in 1985. Some 53 years later on 12 April 1985, a visit by the then RI President, Carlos Canseco, resulted in a second tree being planted.
The plague reads “On this day (17 August 1932) Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary International during his visit to Berlin planted this friendship tree at the airport Tempelhofer.  53 years later Carlos Caneseco President of Rotary International in memory of Paul Harris planted a tree in this spot. The tree was a present from the Rotary Club of Eutin “.
