Guest Speaker – Mel Higgins, RACV – “Years Ahead – Road Safety for Seniors”
Chairman Trevor introduced Mel, who proceeded to enlighten us on some road safety statistics and advice for seniors.  Driving is much more complex these days – more cars, more trucks, motor cycles and bikes, and changing road rules. The stats show that older folk are much more likely to receive serious injuries or to die if they are in an accident than younger people.  Cars in general have become a lot safer – with airbags and ESC (Electronic Stability Control) in particular being beneficial and Mel’s advice was that we should be driving the newest and largest cars we could afford or were practicable for our lifestyle, to maximise our chances of avoiding or surviving any accidents.
The stats weren’t any better for seniors as pedestrians either – the highest number of fatalities and serious injuries to pedestrians were for seniors over 70 years old – and mainly in daylight hours with good weather conditions.
Many reasons why seniors seem to be over-represented in the death and serious injury categories, including being more likely to own older vehicles and be less aware of road rule changes.  However general health issues – sight, hearing, adverse reactions to medication and flexibility are all significant contributors as well.  Mel suggested that seniors should start to plan for the days when they may no longer be able to drive and get familiar with mobility alternatives – public transport, taxis, friends and neighbours to provide a ride etc.
Gerry gave an excellent vote of thanks to Mel who was presented with the customary imitation Mont Blanc pen.
