RCBN Fellowship of Golf
Significantly those participating were competing to be the inaugural winner of the Brearley / Turner Trophy being the name of the perpetual trophy that has been struck, with the concurrence of the late Brian Turner and Geoff Brearley, for the RCBN Fellowship of Golf which is intended to become an annual event in our club’s calendar of events.
The courses played are each a golfer’s mecca and for that reason the inaugural event was planned at this location. The courses are located on the sand dunes of the coast near Bridport and when the wind blows there it is mighty strong which makes the game of golf just that little bit more difficult. We were blessed with superb weather for the two days of competition with clear, sunny skies and no wind on the first day at Barnbougle Dunes and overcast skies and no wind on the other day at Lost Farm .
Those attending the inaugural events were the Abbotts, Bradds, Lanyons, Mitchells, Mortimers, Rowells, Wheatleys and Whitfords. For newer members Keith Whitford is a former member of our club and he and Lynda are true friends of our club. The fellowship over the three nights we were housed at Barnbougle Dunes was second to none with much hilarity and genuine good fun.
The inaugural winner of the Brearley / Turner Trophy is Chris Lanyon with an amazing score of 103 stableford points over two days. Kaye Bradd was second with 86 points and Lyn Mortimer was third with 82 points. The best male was Philip Rowell with 81 points followed by Brian Lanyon with 71 points and Garry Bradd and Jim Mitchell equal third with 63 points.
The whole event was an outstanding success and next year’s Fellowship of Golf is currently being organised with the location being likely to be somewhere on the Murray River with the date being in either the latter half of April or early May . Details will be communicated to members as soon as arrangements are in place.
Finally, those attending acknowledged appropriately whilst there the fact that our very good friend Brian Turner may not have been present in the flesh but was present in spirit.
RIP – Brian.
