Another great evening of fun and information was enjoyed by our Rotarians on Wednesday 5 June 2013. The speaker, former Peace Scholar, Tori Anderson, gave an impassioned talk focussing on the world's child sex trade.

As well as the usual notices three Directors presented summary reports of their committees' work for the year. Peter ASbbott made a relaxed and efficient Chairman.

Kate Strain reported on Foundation for 2012-13. The New Vision trial is complete with changes now entrenched in Rotary. RCBN has donated $3000 to Rotary Foundation (RF: from whence we draw our grants) and $1000 to Polio Plus. Philip Rowell also pointed out our Club has had 100% compliance with payments due to RF. Although Group Study Exchange has finished as a project supported financially by Rotary Foundation, our District 9800 is sending a team to Gerrmany later this year.

Kay Phillips reported on Vocational Service activities over the past year. The Vocational Excellence Award was presented to Julie Podbury, Principal of Brighton Secondary College which has seen enormous progress including a doubling of the school roll in the ten years Julie has been at its helm. RCBN supported ten students to the annual January Science Experience. Our reading support programme at Brighton Primary School has been running since Term 4 2012 ansd now Gardenvale School have requested a similar programme. The Caroline Chisholm Indigenous Scholarship has not been presented this year but may be re-instated in some form in the coming year.

Sue Jones listed a large number of projects undertakken in our comnminity since July last year. As well as $25,000 towards MS from the MS Megaswim and $600 from a BBQ to the Susie Harris Memorial Foundation for Motor Neuron Disease, the big project was a variety of projects with Family Life culminating in the donation, in collaboration with the Freemasons of a truck to Family Life. Other organisations and projects supported with either time and/or monetary donations included: Walk the Tan, Blanket knitiing, DIK rent support, Nganambala School Garden Project, Brighton Sea Scouts, Garden DesignFest and the selling of Sands cards and Christmas Puddings. Sue gave a rundown of the huge number of hours voluntarily given by our Club Rotarians totalling at least a 0.5 full-time person.

All three Directors thanked their wonderful committee members who have truly given Service Above Self this year.

Other notices:

Peter Abbott announced the letters and vouchers presented by Alison.

Barry explained that the TAC breathalysers are still being found suitable locations.

Barb Gordon won the ladies' section of the Family Life Charity Gold Day at Victoria Club and was delighted with the prizes she received.

Richard forgot the Fact of the Week but since he had added to last week's all was forgiven - except by the Sergeants who managed to raise $158. The raffle of about $600 was won by a visitor, Jo Madden.

Your Editor holds the view that the guest speaker should not be summarised in the RCBNews as it is impossible to capture all that is said and give full credit to presenters such as Tori who was passionate about relieving the ghastly lives of children virtually enslaved in the sex trade. She astonished many with her description and video of Australian men indulging in this underworld. Both David Raby and President Jim Mitchell proclaimed Tori a great endorsement of the Peace Scholar prgramme in Rotary.
