Nganambala Vegetable Garden Project
Two members of Brighton North Rotary Club, Kate Strain and Kay Phillips, recently joined with members of Albert Park and Brighton clubs to establish a vegetable garden at Nganambala, one of the Top End group of schools in remote Northern Territory. The school had sufficient water for drinking but not for irrigation so the installation of a tank had to be part of the exercise. The focus was to promote better health through diet and knowledge.

The group of eight hired a 4 wheel drive truck and another was loaned for the week by Red Dust. After buying groceries, food and garden supplies in Darwin the intrepid, would-be gardeners bumped their way from Daly Crossing over two and a half hours of dusty, unsealed, rough roads that had no signs nor lights to show the way which was a bit of a challenge after dark fell.
The group spent the week preparing the base and the soil for the garden; digging it over; mulching; fertilising and, finally, planting. Local men helped collect the stones to line the pathways. The 26 children made templates of animals and birds which were transferred onto the tank to decorate it.
