Grand Finals Night at Brighton North
There was a great deal of chat and fun at RCBN for Grand Finals week. Members enjoyed hearing about the Brearley-Turner (Golf) Trophy and then got into the mood of the footie with a fascinating and challenging sergeant's session followed by an interview style presentation by special guest speaker, four times Richmond premiership player, Michael Green. a career spanning 1966 to 1975 with a year off in 1972 (when they didn’t win the flag), 146 games only, 83 goals, Richmond Team of the Century and Hall of Fame, Committeeman, coach, a man who has given so much back to football, a man who received so much from football including many whacks from John Nicholls and Sam Newman. Interestingly the first person Michael met when he joined Richmond in 1966 was our own Mike Michelson. In an interview style address with Phil R asking the questions we learned a lot about the RFC in its most successful decade, about the men who ran the club and their very positive attitude, about the fact that good people are so important and that the bonds of friendship between the players is more meaningful than the on field successes.
Michael spoke of the need for young players to be carefully nurtured and guided especially when large sums of money are involved and that he felt so privileged to have been part of such a talented and successful playing group. It was an articulate, honest and enlightening chat from a man so clearly appreciative of the support of his wife Rita.
