Commander Mark Muir was born in 1959 in Brighton Hospital, opposite Brighton
Grammar. Raised in Black Rock and completing Year 12 at Beaumaris High School he
studied Applied Chemistry at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Graduating
in 1979, he worked as a research chemist for Kraft Foods and taught secondary
mathematics and science on the Mornington Peninsula until 1988.
In August 1988, he joined the Royal Australian Naval College as a Lieutenant Instructor
Officer and completed Junior Officer Training.  After completing various training positions
in HMAS Cerberus and HMAS Albatross he was selected to attend a Master of Science
in Instructional Systems Design at Florida State University in 1996. He returned to
HMAS Cerberus to manage training support and develop training policy for Navy.

In 2002, Commander Muir moved to Canberra to lead development of Navy aspects of
the Defence Human Resources system and was Head of a new Directorate for Navy. In
December 2006 he graduated from the University of Canberra as a Master of Business
Informatics and moved back to HMAS Cerberus to head a Personnel Training Contra
responsible for Navy's Training Prizes and Awards, Trainee Travel Expenditure, Training
Planning, Position Prerequisite and Training Research.

Commander Muir is a major research officer for the Director Navy Training Policy, Officer
in Charge of Navy Training Development and Flexible Learning, Officer in Charge of the
ADF Gap Year for Navy as well as the sponsor for all officers in the Navy Training
Systems Primary Qualification.
