Annual Schools' Debate
For the last 20 years, the Rotary Club of Brighton North has hosted the annual Firbank versus Brighton Grammar Schools' Debate. Debating is the art of persuasion and this year's teams both presented a dynamic argument with the moot: "That the individual has the right to publish any photograph they take".

The teams were closely matched with affirmative BGS's Sam Fairchild, Lachlan Scott and Joel Le Couteur ranked slightly above the negating team of Naskosia Bartlett, Madeleine Petch and Rebecca Parnish on the night by adjudicator Daryl Williams SC. In awarding the debate to BGS, Daryl felt that they went about their task of persuasion better than Firbank. Joel Le Couteur was judged best speaker.
We have promised 20 volunteers for City2Sea on 11 November, please.

Glennie's Fact of the Week described the Annual Debate of 5 years ago when Firbank won the moot: "Big is Better." Perhaps that was because there was a Brearley in the team...
We also heard that Barrie is snowed in at Arthur's Pass (high in the Southern Alps of NZ).
"Don't call me; call Lyn." Whilst Barb Beed is in the UK, Lyn will be looking after attendance and catering matters.
Don wasn't sure about the joys of being a team leader tripping through Tibet. Amongst other delights the teacher of how to avoid Altitude Sickness got just that; he was attached by wild dogs and had a monkey steal his water bottle. The weather was cold and the political climate over-heated.
RYPEN is nigh.
A reminder to get any shoe boxes of Christmas goodies for children to Sue as soon as possible please.

I feel a fine coming on. Is that really a mobile phone in Sergeant Peter's hand? Past President Ian, on the other hand, is enjoying Daryl's summation of the debate. What a splendid trophy! The list of winners shows that both schools produce excellent debating teams.
Peter Abbott thanks our adjudicator to the amusement of the top table.
