Actions for Members Please and October Board Report
Rotary Themes: We are intending to publish brief stories in the bulletin to better inform members about the Rotary themes and especially our Club projects. Please help your Director if you are asked to write a piece for RCBNews about a project you may be leading. I hope you have enjoyed finding out a little more about Vocational Service during October. November is Foundation Month.
Board Report Summary October:
Club Service –
The procedure derived from the Vision Session will be presented at the Club Forum.
Community –
Look ahead and start training – the MS MegaSwim will be held again next year on 6-7 July (school hols).
Sue J and Lyn M attended Brighton Central Probus meeting to give a report on our club, and sell Rotary puddings and shortbreads left over from last year. 93 people attended. One more Probus club to visit in November.
Foundation -
Brian Roche attended the District Foundation Seminar and found it very informative. It reinforced that once we have identified a project we can more easily access funds.
Our GSE Candidate, Kirsten has reported in from London saying the trip is off at top speed
International -
We have just returned from Tibet where we took a group of Rotarians from Phillip Island, Keilor East and Endeavour Hills to participate in work on our projects. The plan was to visit our projects in Kham, eastern Tibet then to travel to the capitol, Lhasa, where we have our most successful project, which is a medical clinic about 2 hours out of Lhasa. This clinic treats approximately 10,000 patients per annum…free including medicines.
Richard Potter and Norm Brasch went to Savu Island (Sabu). This is a joint project with the Rotary Club of Beaumaris. The program will be assisting with a Water Well Project and also the provision of medical supplies for the local village where they will be working.
International projects for this year: Sabu Island; Sumba Eye Program; Tibetan Village Project Australia; R.A.M.; Disaster Aid; R.O.M.A.C.
Membership & Marketing -Bay Street festival - Will not occur before Christmas. Most likely to be held in conjunction with completion of streetscape works and launch of historical signage in March 2013
Facebook off to a slow start but includes at least weekly updates. Need to increase number of visitors to site.ew member kit - review of material in progress
Public profile - chasing up where RCBN has some internet presence and updating as necessary. For example, RCBN listing on Bayside City Council website still shows meetings held at Kyats!
Vocational Service -
Reading in Schools: The reading roster is under way this term at Brighton Primary. Many thanks to Christina for organising and to all those helping.
Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation Scholarship: We are still having difficulty getting contact information from the new EO for Gregg, our Scholarship recipient, to visit our Club. Shine On Awards: Meg would still love to hear of a suitable person as a possible nominee. Our first “choice” had already received a Shine On Award.
The Science Experience: Linda has been communicating with several schools and we are supporting Star of the Sea and Brighton Secondary College. It has been decided, with the schools, to give half costs for each student. This means a lot more can be supported and it also means the students have more “ownership” as they have to find some of the money. We will ensure no student who wants to go will miss out because they cannot afford their half of the cost.
Vocational Excellence Awards: Letters seeking possible nominations from businesses and organisations in the Bayside area are due out.
Vocational Visit: More than 30 members and partners enjoyed visiting the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute this month. Thanks Philip Rowell for organising such a great workplace visit.
Annual Debate: Over 20 years has passed since the first RCBN Debate between Brighton Grammar School and Firbank. This was another fascinating meeting and the very ethically inclined moot “That the individual has the right to publish any photograph they take" was robustly debated with BGS coming out the winners.
RCBNews Stories: During this Rotary Vocational Service month you will see each week a story about some aspect of Vocational Service.
Fundraising –
Golf Day - Current numbers at 50, hope to raise this to 60 players. Two players gained through Golflink website. GB reported that he is hopeful all the Gold packages will be taken. The event is not Ambrose but an alternative with winners being :- Best individual stableford score, a runner up individual stableford score and Best Team score. There will be no auction this year.
